At least the wife is getting a mention. She isn't even mentioned in any of the books that I remember. And I think the necklace idea kind of works in movie context where there isn't time to explain what Thranduil is actually after in the books.

I actually liked the movie Thranduil for the most part. He's an elf that's more withdrawn from this world and its concerns and is focused on protecting his own. I think for the most part that is fitting with the Thranduil of the book. Though the racism not so much, but that was the one thing that really bugged me. The dragon-scar was weird, but it didn't effect the character too much for me. I agree that Thranduil should say something about not going to war over jewels, though.

I feel like the only one on here who's okay with Thranduil's characterization. He has flaws, but I don't think it means the movies are vilifying him.

No, I totally agree. There were a couple things that bugged me (the racism was a misinterpretation of the hierarchy of elves in Tolkien that is uncomfortable in today's world, IMHO), but for the most part I liked him.
