This is very, very true. Many of the characters only have a few lines (or less) about them. The Silmarillion is history. It is about creating the world and the main events in it, not about characterization. There are some things you can get from the book and some things that are logical assumptions, but a lot of it is people's own personal headcanon about the character.

Yes, and I find that type of fandom very dull because there's no actual character there, just a bunch of people arguing about headcanons.

Personally, I just really, really love the world. And I love expanding characterization in my head of characters I find interesting, though I don't argue with other people because headcanon is a personal thing. But, like, Celebrimbor is the guy who helps Sauron make the rings and basically gets seduced and yet he's the guy who wants to escape Feanor's legacy and is genuinely trying to do the right thing and protect his people. There is a lot to work with there even if there isn't a whole lot of characterization in the books. And a lot of other characters in the Silmarillion are like that. I love imagining what they are thinking at particular moments.

It would be dull if you have no imagination.

There are tons of characters who are fleshed out in the canon who have room for development and different interpretations in fandom. Just don't argue there's anything there in canon or get angry that someone isn't into a character when all you know about them is "A begat B".

Which I didn't. Someone's projecting.
