The people raging at others to not go see BH6 or support it because of this film are bizarre, because I'm sure they're the same people who complained that Frozen was bad because the characters were white. Now Disney put out a film with a diverse cast and they're still mad. Despite the fact that supporting BH6 means Disney would be more likely to make more PoC lead films?

Wait this is a thing?

And when did animated film fandom become Highlander?

When tumblr sj became the new trend

I think that's to do with whenever a fandom is the "first" to do something or other.

Yeah their logic baffles me. Thankfully those people don't make up the majority of movie-goers.

OP

My same friends are pretty much doing the exact thing. Hates Frozen to death even though she hasn't even seen a single minute of it.
She was also mad because the main character in BH6 didn't look "Asian enough" for her, and the other Asian character apparently has purple stripes in her hair or something, which she thought was an offensive stereotype.
To put in context, she's Chinese herself, so I understand her need for representation, but a lot of the Disney bashing I see from her, and just in general, seems really nitpicky. Like, maybe you should at least see the actual movie first before making any quick judgements...?

Other Asian characters with a purple color stripe in their hair:
1. Mako Mori
2. The main chick from Kill la Kill
3. ... ?

So two examples makes a stereotype? One of which is from an anime made - shock! by actual Asian people?!

I assumed it was a based on some actual recent Japanese fad if anything.

Yes, it's tumblr, but...

So it is a weirdly common trope that's popped up for some reason.

Ah.

And I bet they're going to want it both ways, so when a white person gets a streak in their hair, they'll call it cultural appropriation.

I saw a really good response to that, which I can't find now but it showed a bunch of real life examples of dyed hair as a trend in Asian countries.

OMG I HAVE A COWORKER WHO HATES MULAN BECAUSE SHE LOOKS "TOO ASIAN"

Your friend and my coworker need to hang out.

because the diverse cast was "whitewashed" from the comic it's based (VERY loosely) on. so the diversity doesn't count. because if the movie had failed due to social justice outrage over "whitewashing," disney would know from the low ticket sales that that was the problem, and would create even less white casts in the future. certainly they would not assume that the film had failed BECAUSE of the diverse cast and make more white white white films. oh no, never.

The irony being that I remember reading the comic way back when, and it was... not the most dignified treatment of Asian cultures. It's been a long time, and I don't remember all the details, but it struck me as having been written by a white guy who had seen a few Godzilla movies and maybe an episode or two of a late '80s/early '90s anime as the entirety of his exposure to Asian culture.
