For me, it was how they wrote/played the character; she seemed to have such a playful attitude about sex and relationships that was (at least from what I recall) fairly rare at the time.

That is true, and I give her that. But it seemed so by-the-numbers and I didn't find it convincing, otherwise that might have been enough for me to like her.

This. And her attitude about sex and relationships wasn't just about being hot or appealing to men. She was in charge of her own sexuality. I mean, sure, they played up the sex appeal, but that wasn't all it was. And I appreciated that.

Exactly.

Garnted, my exposure to pop culture has been limited, but offhand, I can't think of any other female character who had such an honest enjoyment of her sexuality and yet never (as far as I can recall) fell back on using "feminine wiles" to manipulate anyone (well, okay, maybe Quark once or twice, for humorous effect? I can't recall precisely.) ~ I also loved her salt-and-pepper friendship with Kira.
