In OP's defence, it can seem, if not faddy (I was doing it 15 years ago so definitely not), then at least like its popularity waxes and wanes depending on your fandom. There are times where you can't move for RP blogs in some fandoms, and other times where they've all disappeared.

If it seems that way, then you're moving in the wrong circles. RP has always been a strong part of fandom from my experience.

I do think it's funny that OP calls it a fad, when it's been a very sustained part of fandom and online culture.

Your experience =/= everyone else's. Different fandoms work in different ways.

It might have been that way for you, but I've been in fandoms where the RP side was virtually non-existent. Other fandoms will have a glut of RPers for a short time before something else takes priority and they all move on to something else within the same fandom. Others cycle back and forth.

And if you don't like RP, then you'd be moving in the right circles, as the case seems to be for OP right now.
