I'm sure you think this was clever, but the point is if you're going to dismiss gossip from an unreliable source as being rubbish, then your rebuttal should be more credible, not equally incredible or less credible. Otherwise you look equally ridiculous.

I don't think you understand how these things work: If you accuse someone of doing something shitty and your only source is bad and out of context gossip, you are the one who carries the burden of proof, not the person making a rebuttal.
