I'd feel the same way. It would send my self-esteem plummeting to get a comment out of pity from someone who hadn't even read the work. If a comment is totally hollow, then that really doesn't help anything. I'm operating from a false perspective if I attach any meaning to it.

And yep, I'll also be looking at every comment that doesn't actually mention something fic-specific in a new light now after finding out this is a thing people actually do (you can argue that "it's only OP that does it!" but if OP does it and brags about it here then you can bet there are other people doing the same thing). Which sucks.
