Yeah, he's hardly the worst character in HxH, but he's certainly not a good guy either. I think he gets a lot of the fandom's hate simply because a bad father is a kind of bad more people have personally experienced than y'know, genocidal maniacs, so they take him a little more personally? Like how people hate Voldemort versus how they hate Umbridge?

Does he get much serious hate though? I thought most of it was just people joining in with the fun heckling that you see in canon (Leorio and the Hunters from the Association shouting at him about Gon). Also, the latest (weird) tumblr trend to refer to all your favorite characters as "trash".

Having said that, in a Togashi manga being an inspirational person and being a terrible person can easily come hand in hand. I've always got the impression that Togashi is firmly in the moral person equals boring person camp.

I'm bothered less by the fact that he's a bad father and more by the fact that Gon idealizes him so much. Gon isn't mad at him at all for running out, which kinda boggles me. I think it's Gon's unfailing idealism that makes me hate his dad more for being a dick to him.
