Nicknames and how to get them

(Anonymous) 2014-11-20 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
In honour of a David "Low Strong" Sirlin secret, what nicknames do you have, think you have, joke that you have, or wish that you had?

Ever give yourself a weird nickname? (Other than internet names, but you can talk about those too.)

The one everyone uses for me is boring. It is Ash (short for Ashley). Most people online call me Kaijin which came from a nickname I had in highschool.

When I was a child I was called Hobbit. Now a lot of people call me Aims (nickname for my name, which is already just three letters long so....), and people who know me online as well call me Nan.

I get called Hobbit too! It's because I'm short and have curly hair and am a Tolkien fan... I guess it was only to be expected.

I've only ever had one nickname as far as I can remember and I still have no fucking idea what it meant. It was in high school, and I was in a (kind of low-effort) music class to take care of my arts requirement, and for whatever reason, I was with a bunch of kids who were, frankly, idiot jocks. And I say that with all affection, we got along fine, but they were ridiculous idiots. Anyway, for whatever reason, I was christened with the acronym nickname [first initial].T.B. And to this day, again, I have no goddamn idea what it stood for. Was it insulting? Ironic? Positive? I literally don't know. Was I the bitch? The boss? Some other thing I can't imagine? I will probably never find out.

Anyway, yeah, that's the only nickname I've ever had.

I had a friend in high school who gave EVERYBODY alternate names.

I was "Internet."

I have the worst nicknames.

Snow White. I get it, I'm pale with dark hair.
And then some sort of dudebro sounding word made from my last name, shortened, and with an O.
There are more.

People call me everything but my real name. Apparently it's too girly or common?

My parents sometimes call me Deedee, for reasons no one can remember. (It's unrelated to my actual name.) When my little brother and older sister and I were very small, my pre-verbal brother addressed me as "Ee" (last syllable of my name) and my sister as "Guh" (her name was beyong him.) The names stuck, and in middle age we are *still* sometimes addressed by those names in our family. It's pretty funny, but I'm grateful I got Ee instead of Guh.

I have a couple. I go by a different variation of my first name now than I did when I was growing up, so I already have two different names for different contexts. Some people call me by my last name. I joked to one friend that I will respond to just about anything, so he used to call me Susan (not close to my real name). Another friend calls me an abbreviation of my middle name.

But in all that, I wish I had more fun actual nicknames.

Work nickname is dangerous. Which let's be real, is a pretty fucking great nickname (even if it is ironic).

Pretend to hate it, but grin inside everytime it gets used.

Only downside is there's an original dangerous, and I'm not even a patch on him. From the stories that guy fucking owned up to his nickname in everyway.

I have a friend who used to give everyone lots of weird nicknames. Most of them were words or made-up names that sounded vaguely like the person's real name. Her weirdest one for me was "Bromeliad," which... well, both it and my name have an "il" sound in them, and that's about all.

A slightly odd one, but I apparently gained the nickname 'Harry' from the kids in the school I used to walk past on my way to my old workplace. It took me the first few hollers across the street before I realised that a) they really were calling at me, and b) they meant Harry as in Harry Potter. Which ... kind of makes sense? I'm female, but I'm also five foot nothing with short dark hair and glasses. Plus, it's Harry Potter. I can roll with that.

I spent about two weeks wondering who the hell they were calling 'Harry' though.

I'm called shortened versions of both my first and last names.

Also had one coworker who ironically called me Sunshine because I'm not a morning person and was a cranky SOB every morning.

When I first did the local BBS circuit in the days before the internet, people shortened my early handles to "Mass" or "Birdie". I still occasionally get people calling me "Mass" on Facebook because that's how we met 20 years ago.

This is particularly amusing when you consider that I weigh 65ish pounds and therefore "mass" is about the least appropriate word to describe me. XD

I had very noticeable canine teeth before I got braces, so kids in school called me Dracula sometimes. I kind of thought it was cool, actually.

Smitty, duh, my last name is Smith. Usually combined with 'the Werewolf' when I was in high school. It's very strange to be out with a cute lawyer you're trying to impress, and hear someone shouting, "It's Smitty the Werewolf!" at you, about three hours (and seven years) away from the school where you earned said nickname.

Mouse, because I'm little, cute, and squeak.

Roar, which goes along with Mouse, because I was the Mouse Who Roared.

I have a ridiculous amount of nicknames. My family has about 10 for me because my mum gives everyone and everything nicknames. My sisters also have a large number of nicknames for me that build on my mum's. As a result of my sisters referring to me in public by one of my nicknames when I was younger, a lot of my older friends call me by a family nickname that my family doesn't use for me anymore - to the point that when I meet friends of those friends they often call me by that name just because they've only heard of me referred to by that. Which gets a bit weird sometimes, but I like the name and know it means that I've been talked about fondly so I deal :)

I have never really wished for a nickname or given myself one, mostly because of the stupid amount I already have, ha.

Growing up my nicknames were Twinkie (my brother called me that, a la Moe from Calvin and Hobbes), and Wheezie (was and am still asthmatic).

At work it's Little B, because my mum and I worked at the same place until last January when she retired, so I was Little B and she was Big B. XD

I have had some weird ones as a kid that never really stuck.

As of right now, I don't really have nicknames irl, people just call me by my full first name (sometimes people shorten it but I HATE the shortened version, and it's only two syllables long to begin with, sheesh) but online I'm known as Raichu pretty much everywhere (here and Steam are the only two places I use a different handle, and I use this one for both, but I still answer to Raichu). I had a group of friends irl who called me that for a while too, since we met doing something nerdy and they decided to assign everyone a nickname, but that group fizzled out a while ago.

I'm a Rebecca that hates the usual Rebecca nicknames/diminutives. So I've been called pretty much nothing else since I was 5 (and even then, that was only by family). Sometimes they also called me RC, because I used to sign my artwork "RC:)" Forreals, my childhood signature had an emoticon before emoticons were even a thing.

However, over the last few years, some of my friends have started calling me "R." a bit, because I always just sign my emails to them -R.

a few of my friends who, like me, are big MST3K fans, sometimes call me "TV's {my first name}", like TV's Frank. I think it's funny.
