What exactly does a "college student" do and why do they make more than the animator?

low-level animators are paid per page and aren't on contract, so they can end up being paid well below minimum wage

college student is part-time work

I guess I'm confused as to what they're actually doing at the anime studio. Just like, intern stuff? Filing and such?
