But it's hardly like the movie adaptions are so much more female friendly than the comics. In some cases they're even worse.

That is another aspect to what I was implying, true. Very few of the singular Big Name female superheros get adaptions, and when they do, they turn out very male-gazey. Need I mention what happened the one time Catwoman got a stand-alone adaption?
