I got nothing for ya - I only ever ate them raw, I think.

Get a pot roast and brown it on all the sides in a big pot. Take it out and sautee some garlic and onions in the pot. Make big cubes of your turnips, potatoes, carrots, celery, and a bunch of mushrooms. Add your veg, meat, some beef or chicken stock, and some dark beer. Season with S&P and some bay leaves. Leave it to braise on low for a few hours until it's tender. Nom nom nom.

If your turnips have greens, wash 'em well and add to salad.

Carve them into jack-o-lanterns.

Oh hey, it's the 17th century version of Merv Pumpkinhead from Sandman:

Boil them and mash them and mix in butter, brown sugar and cinnamon.

I thought it was "boil 'em, mash 'em, stick 'em in a stew"? ;)

You can stew em, but for me it is adding the cinnamon and sugar. My mother and I would eat them every Thanksgiving. My father and brother are not big fans of them.

You could make Baldrick's Turnip Surprise from Blackadder II.

Take one turnip. Do not peel turnip. Serve uncooked and unsliced.

The surprise is that it is just a turnip.
