Dragon Age: Inquisition

[personal profile] elaminator 2014-11-21 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
So, who's playing? Does anyone want to show off their Inquisitor(s)? (I know it's still early and a lot of people who are interested probably haven't had the chance to pick the game up (or play yet), but I figure we can have another thread like this later as well.)

Who is your favorite companion so far? Are you still on board with romancing whoever you planned to romance, or did you change your mind? Is the game meeting your expectations?

No spoilers, please!

I tried to make a sexy Qunari lady, but I wasn't satisfied with the result, so I'll have to try again later.

I originally planned to romance Iron Bull, and I still want to do that, but I'm tempted by everyone. Almost everyone is perfect and beautiful and ugh, it is difficult to choose. I've even changed my mind on characters like Cass and Cullen; wasn't sure about those two, but so far I'm a big fan! As of right now, I think instead of romancing Sera second, it'll be Josephine. She's one of my favorites so far, along with Bull. Also, Scout Harding is adorable beyond words. (Still need to pick up Dorian and Cole, but everything is going well and there's not one companion I don't like. I'm pleasantly surprised by how pretty, massive and fun the game is, and although I can't say I agree with every change (tactics, for instance), this is a major improvement on Dragon Age 2! I'm excited to play more.

The graphics are so beautiful in this game, Christ. There are a few issues here and there but I'm incredibly impressed by how nice it looks and how smooth it runs.

Nooooooo stop! Jk but I hate that this game wasn't delayed again. I've preordered it, so probably have it at my family's house now, but I'm busy with postgrad work in a different country and probably won't get to play it until next month at least. So distressed!

Oh no, that's terrible! What unlucky timing! I hope it doesn't take you that long to get around to it, but in the meantime I hope you stay unspoiled. :(

From what I've heard (online) the game probably should have been delayed again, haha. Apparently there are tons of glitches. (I haven't run into any major ones yet, just a couple small things, but I know it's frustrating for those who are having trouble playing. Maybe it's a good thing you can wait for the updates.)

I was wondering if there were any Unity-style videos for the glitches after I ran into a couple of minor funny ones. My favorite so far has been some of my companions dropping from the air onto the ground when things load. Hasn't happened with Varric yet, but Solas and Vivenne tend to get some great air!

Re: Dragon Age: Inquisition

Haha, that sounds hilarious! (And slightly terrifying.) The biggest one for me was when I was having a conversation with an NPC and another random NPC came out of nowhere, flashing past my party. (And through a set of gates.) They proceeded to do it several more times so I couldn't focus on what was being said.

Re: Dragon Age: Inquisition

[personal profile] ex_earthshaker594 2014-11-21 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, that one sounds awful. I already have trouble toggling R3 when I happen to run past an important NPC (got me into trouble a bit ago), but that would make me lose my focus for sure, too.

The air drops are a bit scary, but I think it's because it also reminds me of the Sims or Black and White. I know we're dealing with some crazy stuff here, but it doesn't have to get that bad!

Re: Dragon Age: Inquisition

[personal profile] elaminator 2014-11-21 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, Black and White. It's true, we don't need God mode in this game; that would shake things up a bit TOO much.

It was distracting, but thankfully it's only happened the once.

ayrt

I'm terrified of getting spoiled! I've been following official Dragon Age stuff in excitement but the day it came off I had to force myself not to look at anything. But it's hard when I'm used to obsessively looking up info about the characters and plot.

Haha go figure - if it's as massive as they claim it is, I am certain there will be loads of glitches. I enjoy a good glitch every now and again, unless it makes certain quests or achievements impossible. Well, maybe a month is long enough for a patch, official or otherwise, to get thrown together.

Enjoy the game! :D

Re: Dragon Age: Inquisition

[personal profile] elaminator 2014-11-21 12:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I was kind of the opposite! I didn't want to learn TOO much about the game and characters and get spoiled or gain unrealistic expectations; it was only the last few weeks that I started to watch vids, though I'd read some stuff before that. I haven't been disappointed yet! (Not majorly, anyway.)

It is indeed that massive; I keep comparing it to Skyrim which I know is predictable, but I don't know how else to explain how big it is. (Except there's no loading in the PC version for much of it. It might take a bit to load the area map the first time, but after that it's seamless.)

I'm surprised how stable it's been for me considering it's both gigantic and graphically impressive, but no, not everyone is so lucky. Glitches are to be expected for a game this big though.

Thanks! I'd say stay away from tumblr, but at least people can tag their spoilers. You might not even use it, but if you do be careful! I was worried about eventually being spoiled here, but for right now it seems like most people don't have the game, are playing it and aren't on fs, or don't care.

Again, I hope it doesn't take a month! That's such a long time when you're excited.

The reason I play these games in the first place is the story/characters so I get you. I do enjoy the gameplay, but it isn't what's most important to me.

I hope you both enjoy!

We do. We both laugh at moments in both the Dragon Age games and Mass Effect ones.

I've only got some crappy pictures of my Inquisitor that I took with the camera on my 3DS (anon is a console gamer), but I love how he turned out except for the vallaslin. This is my elf dual weapon rogue:

http://puu.sh/cZ332/f6bd5993bf.JPG

I originally planned to romance Iron Bull, but meeting him in game actually put me off of him entirely, so I'm romancing Dorian instead. I love Dorian so much, he's the kind of person I would actually be besties with if he existed.

The game really is meeting and exceeding all my expectations! There've been a couple glitches here and there, but I haven't encountered anything remotely close to gamebreaking or even forcing a reload to a previous save.

I'm more of a console gamer myself but I've always played Dragon Age on PC. It's one of the only series, though. As long as you're having fun it doesn't matter. (However, the screencap feature is very nice.)

Our elves have the same hair! We share good taste. Cute elf!

Aww, that's too bad. Bull hasn't said anything to offend me yet so as for now I'm still in, but maybe after I meet Dorian I'll change my mind. (Though I'd like to leave that for another playthrough.) I should go get Dorian, he looked neat in the previews.

Same, I'm super pleased with everything. I'm amazed at how good everything has turned out so far and how few glitches I've had (considering all the ones everyone else is experiencing). Guess we're lucky.

I first played both DAO and DA2 on PC, then later bought them for Xbox 360 as well. Playing on PC is nice for the mods (mostly for the bug fixes) and screen caps, but I can never get the hang of keyboard/mouse controls for anything, so if I can't map a controller to it I end up failing miserably.

Thank you! I love my silly little elf, even though I've spent 99% of my play time running around the Hinterlands picking plants and collecting other various crafting materials.

Bull's ragging on Krem for being from Tevinter when we first meet him is what made me put him in what I call time-out, which involves leaving them with Cassandra (who is terrifying but I love her so much) until their dialogue improves. They also get thrown there if they can't be nice to each other, so if Dorian, Cole and Blackwall can't get along I'm gonna have a problem.

Reading all about everyone's bugs they're experiencing is awful, because I'm pretty sure the worst thing I've ever experienced is sometimes the dialogue wheel doesn't display icons? And I'm not even sure if that's a bug or intentional for those particular bits of dialogue, since I've seen videos on Youtube where those exact spots have the same issue cross platforms. Guess we'll find out with the first patch.

I'm excited to get to play with multiplayer eventually, but I doubt anyone's messing with it right now so I'm putting it off until either my brother has a day off work and wants to play or more people start to play it.

minor party convo spoilers

[personal profile] elaminator 2014-11-21 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
I've only played Mass Effect on 360 so I feel similarly about that. I loved having a controller for that game. Because I've never played Dragon Age on a console I can't imagine how it would work, but seeing as I've played plenty of other BioWare games on consoles (including KOTOR and Jade Empire) I'm sure they work beautifully. (The only real downside of PC for me is that it kills my back, but who needs good posture anyway?)

God, the amount of resources I've collected is ridiculous...for the first few hours I did almost only collecting and running around. Still haven't done much storywise, mostly closed rifts, set up camps and completed minor quests. I'm having fun though.

Ah, that. I didn't take it seriously and don't think Bull meant offense (he seems quite respectful, but with a laid-back attitude and sense of humor) but it happens. You'll never like everything your companions say or do. Viv (who def doesn't like that name; I can't remember how to spell her full name yet though and don't feel like googling) just got on Bull's ass for shortening her name, and he corrected himself. It was cute. (Solas and Bull have the most antagonistic dialogue I've come across so far, but it seems mostly one-sided; Solas isn't a fan of the Qun, and won't let it lie. I haven't seen anything Anders/Fenris levels yet though, and hope I don't. lmao.)

Re: Dragon Age: Inquisition

(Anonymous) 2014-11-21 12:38 pm (UTC)(link)
On one hand, I really want to create an Inquisitor already and play the game (though I don't have the time yet atm anyway) but on the other hand, from what I've heard there is just so much "we'll take all kinds of RL SJ issues and stuff'em in the game" that I'm afraid it will be this annoying "let's educate the gamers about SJ instead of having a good plot" thing all through the game. And yeah, no thanks, I have enough shitty things in my real life, I kind of don't want to have to deal with that shit in my escapist fantasy RPG as well.

Doesn't help that I already want to bully half of the companions out of my troupe without having played it. I really could have done without Cullen and especially Leliana and the Bull already annoys the hell out of me just from reading about him.

Re: Dragon Age: Inquisition

[personal profile] elaminator 2014-11-21 12:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Well YMMV but I haven't really noticed that? So far the game has felt way lighter in tone than Dragon age 2 despite still dealing with mages vs. templars and the whole rift situation. Most the party conversations I've experienced have been delightful (And the ones that aren't are still well written and enlightening in some way) and Cullen and Cass are way different than I assumed. Same for Bull to an extent.

If you can't or don't want to deal with a serious issue now and then maybe wait and see what people you trust think, but I feel like this game isn't all that different than BioWare's other fare. (Well, bigger and open world, and def better than sone of their other games, but it just feels like a normal progression of this world to me.)

Re: Dragon Age: Inquisition

(Anonymous) 2014-11-21 01:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, maybe it's just the way that certain corners of the fandom have started overemphasising the SJ topics - I wouldn't be surprised. So I'm going to play it anyway, no question, but I'm a bit torn about how much I should anticipate playing it.

And I have to say, one of the main things that really turns me off is the open world thing. I hate open world games like Skyrim, because I always get lost and start doing tons of random shit instead of following the main plot and then I get bored and never touch the game again without finishing it. To each their own, but I hate open world games, I can't enjoy them at all.

Re: Dragon Age: Inquisition

[personal profile] elaminator 2014-11-21 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I have no idea what SJ topics you're referring to, but there are a couple things I could see them being happy with (like Krem, for example. I haven't spoken to him much yet, but I'm glad he was included in the game. He's a good character so far). Is there lots of wank, or praise? Either way I think the game is doing a pretty good job of handling things, but I don't see any 'preaching' or whatever. Maybe I'm not the best person to ask though...I don't mind discussion on touchy topics as long as people are reasonable about it.

I hear that the main storyline runs between 60-80 hours, so if you wanted to do mostly that you probably could (and still get a lot of game-play in), but the way this game is set up probably would require you to do some exploring and such in order to level up, so it might not be what you're looking for. I like Skyrim, but I still haven't completed that game for the same reasons; I get distracted and forget about the main story. I don't think that will be as easy to do here, and there's clearly a lot of collecting and quests that are completely optional, but the Skyrim comparisons aren't for nothing.

Re: Dragon Age: Inquisition

(Anonymous) 2014-11-22 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, about Krem. How is it brought up? Do you have to explictely ask or does the player get told without asking? Because the latter would annoy me, because I really don't care about other peoples' genitals and just bringing it up out of context is a pretty clear sign for this sort of "look how progressive we are!". Also, people in fandom apparently already go ballistic about him, policing how you are supposed to draw him in fanart before anyone ever drew him.
elaminator: (Dragon Age: Sten)

Re: Dragon Age: Inquisition

[personal profile] elaminator 2014-11-22 01:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't had that conversation yet, so I have no idea when or how exactly it pops up. I saw a vid online a while back but it didn't help with context.

You must've hated Zevran and Isabela, and will probably hate Bull too, lmao. I don't care myself, and don't think of it in that way (trying to win points for being progressive) because lots of folk do like to talk about themselves, and some people are very open about their life or preferences.

The fanart thing does sound kind of annoying, but since I haven't seen it I can't say much about it. Even if the fandom is weird about it that won't change my opinion of the character, though.
