First Role You See an Actor In

(Anonymous) 2014-11-21 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
So, do you have a perception of an actor that's colored by the first role you see him/her?

For instance, the fist time I saw Viola Davis was on Law&Order Criminal Intent playing a killer. She did an amazing job at the role and to this day, whenever I see her, the first thing I think is ice-cold killer (even though I don't think SHE'S a killer, obviously).

How about you?

Well I just saw the guy who plays/played Moriarty in Sherlock as a totally sincere and innocent man framed for murder in Foyles war so yeah I agree with you. I kept thinking that they were going to reveal that he did it after all.

Andrew Scott has this thing going where if he's a guest star in some kind of crime series, he's going to wind up in jail. He's jailed in Sherlock (for evols), in Foyle's War (for keeping his mouth shut), and in Garrow's Law (for being gay in the 18th century).

Yes. First time I ever saw Ralph Fiennes was in Schindler's List. He still terrifies me. D:

Maid in Manhattan is SO much fun to watch if you pretend that Fiennes is one step away from a murderous rampage the whole time.

Uh, I first saw Jennifer Morrison on House, which has colored my view of her other characters far more than I'd like since I absolutely hated her House character. It made it hard for me to warm up to Emma, though I've mostly managed to get past it.

Yeah, I hated House and hated both Morrison and Olivia Wilde on it but I actually find out that I like them both in many of their other roles.

Paul McGann will always be the dad from FairyTale to me. Which makes it extra hilarious that the actress who played his daughter in the film (Florence Hoath) later played Nancy in "The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances." The gasmask zombie is the Doctor's grandson.

It's not so much always first role, as "role I've seen them in the longest", especially for TV series. Like, I'll never be able to separate Katie Holmes from Dawson's creek, or David Duchovny from X-Files.

Christian Slater in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.

...Let's say he obviously got typecasted a lot so there isn't that much colouring of other roles there. What did colour my impression of him was that I watched that moovie when I was pretty young and there only was my country's dub. And I really liked his voice. And when I watched it years later with the original sound I was... underwhelmed, to say the least.

Harrison Ford will always be Han Solo to me, even though he's done plenty of other things.

Dylan O'Brien will never not be a "Stiles in a movie for some reason" character for me.

I saw Camryn Manheim first in Ghost Whisperer, and I really loved her. But now whenever I see her, especially in Person of Interest, taking on any role that has her remotely dominating and making my heart flutter, I feel like the ghost whisperer's cool friend has multiple jobs and is so cool.

I can't unsee Cary Elwes as a Mel Brook's version of Robin Hood.

Hugo Weaving is a mix of Elrond/Agent Smith.

Well I didn't see him, but playing a lot of Civ IV I got pretty used to Leonard Nimoy's voice. I knew who he was before that, but I wasn't into Star Trek then, so watching TOS I keep expecting Spock to say one of the Civ IV quotes.

Also, whenever I read one of those quotes I hear it in his voice.

...now I wanna play Civ IV.

Imaulda Stanton (I think that's her name) I will always see her as Umbridge. I feel so bad because I'm sure she's a lovely woman. But she makes me think of Umbridge every time and I assume that her character is evil or secretly evil.

Also Alan Rickman will always be Snape. Always

For a long time, the only role I'd seen David Thewlis in was King Einon in Dragonheart. So it kind of ruined his casting as Remus Lupin for me. It's still hard to accept him as Lupin tbh.

I saw Justin Theroux on a Best-Dressed List a few weeks ago and realized that no matter what this man does with his career, he's always going to be Seamus O'Grady from "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle" to me. :P

No, because I never recognise actors I've seen earlier in different roles. I don't know how people do that.

Nathan Fillon as Caleb in BtVS S7.

Every role I've seen him in since that has had even the faintest suggestion of misogyny gets its woman-hatin' dialed up to 11.

Before I started watching Supernatural, I was aware of Castiel by osmosis but had never really seen Misha Collins in anything and ended up watching Karla on TV. It's a really poorly done and inaccurate movie that he begs people not to watch, but he was so good in it (as real life serial killer Paul Bernardo) that I was actually kinda creeped out by him on SPN at first.

Re: First Role You See an Actor In

(Anonymous) 2014-11-21 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
Jon Heder will always be Napoleon Dynamite.

Misha Collins will always be Castiel, and the same is probably true for Jared Padalecki as Sam, but Jensen Ackles is not always Jason Teague (Smallville) and...IDK about Dean, but I saw Smallville first.

Edward Furlong will always be John Connor

Kevin McKidd and Reed Diamond will always be Dan and Jack Vasser (Journeyman).

So, yes, I guess I do this.

For me it's William H. Macy, who I first saw in Searching for Bobby Fischer, in a super-inconsequential role as the father of a totally unimportant-to-the-story chess-playing kid.

To this day, he's just a guy that really really likes tuna fish sandwiches.
