No, I've been here since 2008 and "name the fandom" has always referred to identifying any secret where the fandom is not immediately obvious from image or text. I had no idea #7 was Man from UNCLE until I saw its comment thread.

I like it when people name the fandom too, because I don't usually recognise where the pictures are from.

This. People have done it that way for years (more back on lj though. It seems like it happened much more often there. I haven't really seen much "name the fandom" here)
