I'm -- probably? -- younger than your Tumblr friend, but even I find myself highly self-conscious, and occasionally ashamed, of my squeeing and goofiness.

Having been accused to my face of being too old to behave that way (or, my hater implied, too old to be in any fandom at all), it makes a person much less comfortable even trying to relate. Now every time I either fangirl too hard or do something that inadvertantly reveals my age-bracket, I cringe and withdraw because I figure if this person saw the need to tell me I'm too old, plenty of people are also thinking it without saying it. Whether or not that's empirically true, it has a chilling effect.

So it's very possible she feels that way because of her age, but maybe not for the reasons you'd initially think.
