I do wish sometimes that you had to pass a test to write fic. Or that, if enough people flagged it, shitty fic would be labelled with "seems like it was written by a 12 year old. Proceed at your own risk (for the precious few shitty fic writers who don't tumblr tag their fic to hell, which is a sure sign that it's shit)." not that it helps with getting good fic written.

Yep, because the best way to get quality writing is to humiliate and/or exclude new writers learning the trade. I see no flaw in this.

+1

And it's not like trolls won't be able to get fics flagged because shipwars or not liking the author, right?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-22 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
I said flag it, not ban it. Geez.

DA

Writing (at least fanfic) seems to be about the only art form where the learning stage is done in public though. All the others practice in private and learn their trade to a decent level before the go public.

It's not like we have to wade through a fuckton of ten year olds posting their violin lessons online, so why should writing get a free pass?

Because it's free entertainment.

When you see a professional violinist, you've paid for it. When you go to an art museum, you pay. When you read a book, you paid for it (or someone else did). When you're reading fanfic online, it's free. This really feels like a douchey complaint when you can scroll and backbutton that which you don't like, and people help each other find the good stuff. Not to mention that a lot of it is subjective.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-22 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
Shitty spelling, shitty grammar, and complete OOC plotless crap is not subjective. It's shit. Fics should not be on a site filtered by date posted. They should be subjected to reddit-style voting.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-22 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
Because people will up/downvote fics purely based on their quality, right?

I'm not going to get into an objective/subjective debate here. That part was just an afterthought and not in any way the main point of my comment. Which is basically: stop complaining about free entertainment.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-22 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Wading through shit isn't entertainment, free as it may be.

If it's not fun, why do you do it?

The problem with reddit-style voting is that people downvote and upvote based on what they like, not one whether or not something is good.

People say that, but it's just not true.

Deviantart is full of people posting their first sketches online. And their thirty-second and their three hundred and thirty-second - and sometimes there's not much difference between any of them.

Youtube has tons of 'my violin lessons' on it - along with my first music video, my first anime mash up, and my first musical arrangement. (And frankly, you can hear people practicing their music around the neighborhood/in the apartment complex, regardless of whether they post it online or not. Sound carries, and everyone has opinions on whether or not the new musician is improving.)

Chefs work in restaurants long before their chefs. (And mistakes often make it out to the table.)

It's nonesnse to say 'everyone learns their art to a decent level before they take it public... except the people I want to be mean to, of course' because it's just not true. (That you personally only notice new fic writers could be more true, however.)

Have you actually looked up for covers on Youtube?...
