anyone know anything about migraines?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-22 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I have never before in my 35 years of life had a migraine. Early yesterday afternoon, I started experiencing a scintillating scotoma. I knew what it was (once it grew large and intense enough that I realized I wasn't just seeing spots from looking at a brigt glint of light) because a former co-worker started seeing one about a year or two ago and another former co-woker who got frequent migraines explained what it was and I went and read more about it on Wikipedia. (Former co-worker #1 subsequently got a migraine headache for the first time.)

When I realized what was happening yesterday, I went to look up info online again and the descriptions matched what I was experiencing exactly. I also had another symptom that apparently can be a precursor of a migraine: I had a bad ache in one side of my neck for two or three days that had finally gotten better by yesterday morning (I had chalked this up to the fact that I've been recovering from a cold this past week and had tried sleeping propped up in a sitting position two nights in a row in hopes that would help me sleep the night through instead of waking up coughing - I asumed I had wound up sleeping with my neck bent funny).

However, it's been over 24 hours now and no headache. I had a second scintillating scotoma yesterday about an hour after the first (less intense and shorter in duration) and by the time I got home from work I had a very mild ache behind the eyes and in my forehead, but that went away almost immediately upon taking an ibuprofen. Considering how tired I was between the cold (that had kept me from sleeping well for a week and a half) and a physically intense week at work, there would have been absolutely nothing odd about this if I hadn't had the aura earlier and I really only took the ibuprofen in anticipation of things getting worse. (I don't even know if ibuprofen is a good thing to take for migraines!) I had no trouble sleeping last night (yay for being mostly over my cough!) and so far no headache today.

I read yesterday that it's possible to experience an aura and then not get a headache, but that it's rare. I couldn't find information on how long after the aura phase to expect the headache, just that migraine symptoms can be spread out over "days."

My question: should I still be waiting for the axe to fall now, 24+ hours later, or did I get lucky and there isn't likely to be a migraine headache at this point?

Might not hurt to schedule a consult with your optometrist or opthamologist, just to rule out any optic nerve weirdness. Things like pituitary tumors can first manifest as vision issues.

Sounds like you're getting ocular migraines. I used to get them and went to the doctor about it. There's usually no pain involved or if there is, it's a regular headache. My advice is to go to your doctor. Mine told me I'd have to see a neurologist if they kept happening.

My experience has been that if I get the visual symptoms, I don't get the headache pain. The pain kind of migraine has only come with no visual disturbance for me. My mom's like that too.

Might not be a bad idea to see your doctor, as suggested above.

Scintillating scotoma frequently occur with no symptoms of migraine. Something like 30-40% of people who experience them never experience migraines.

My suggestion is to get more sleep, as often those sorts of visual hallucinations are tied to chronic sleep deprivation.

Definitely go to your doctor to make sure. But it sounds like painless migraines to me. My mum has them, her mother had them, and two of my sisters have them - i'm waiting for the axe to fall myself, so to speak.

Thanks, guys. Still no headache or repeat aura experience.

I'm definitely going to work on getting more sleep now that I can sleep through the night again. I need to renew my contacts prescription before the end of the year, so I'll mention it to the optometrist. I don't think I'll make a special doctor's appointment before my next regular checkup in February or March unless it happens again.
