OP Here

I'm mostly referring to fantasy. There are a few reasons.

-I don't have much interest in politics
-I prefer stories focused on a few people or one small setting rather than ones where the entire country/world is involved
-I've read so many stories about characters revealed to be a prince/princess that I'm automatically suspicious when royalty is a big part of the plot
-In the above mentioned stories, royalty seems used as a way to make the characters special, rich and famous without actually showing the responsibility it entails. The characters end up doing the same things they would have done anyway.

That about sums it up.

Ah, right. I would be annoyed as well if one of the main characters of a fic I was reading was suddenly revealed to be OMG a prince/princess! all along.

I've read quite a few royal AUs or historical fics involving royalty. They were great and fascinating.

The type of fic you're describing puts me right off. Like you say, it's a cheap way of making a character "special" but not really adding anything to them.

ayrt. Yeah, those are all pretty good reasons, I gotta say I tire of eternal plots and scheming for the throne as well, and prefer reading about peasants who don't always turn out to be secret noble orphans.
But I wouldn't go as far as to say I instantly dislike royal protagonists It all depends on how it's handled.
It just usually isn't done well, sadly.
