Re: Game rec thread

Reminded by case and anon yesterday to do this.

Reccing a mobile game - Terra Battle (http://www.terra-battle.com/en/)!

Unfortunately this game is like complete shit at describing itself (seriously, go to the main page, it's impossible to tell what it's about without searching around for at least 5-10 minutes) so I am going to do it instead.

Terra Battle is a neat little turn based tactics game with a battle system based on smart positioning and thinking your way through battles rather than by smashing stuff with power and numbers. You CANNOT smash through things with power and numbers, which is actually a huge appeal of the game. Think of it like some weird combination of checkers and go, but as created by the dude behind the Final Fantasy (http://www.mistwalkercorp.com/en/about/hironobu-sakaguchi.html) series working together with Nobuo Uematsu and a dream team of artists.

Okay, so how does the game actually work?

Basically, there's a grid based field where everything spawns on. That's your checkerboard. Every turn, you can select a character. You have a very limited time period to move it to any other square on the field. An attack happens when two of your characters are on either side of an enemy (or a group of enemies). Luckily, you can use the character you've selected to slowly nudge other character tiles in a particular direction, so that makes it easier to set up attacks. Sounds simple? Well, the enemies can move on their turns and attack you, and there's all manner of floor hazards (traps, poison, rocks, you name it) that turn up later in the game.

It's actually really easy to pick up - surprisingly so - and the battle system is pretty intuitive even though it's also fairly innovative. In terms of genre, it'd probably fall into 'battle puzzler' - and for once, it's really fucking nice to see a mobile game with nice art and a good system that isn't some match-3 derivative.

Anyway, you should know that it's also free to download and start. Yes, there's an in game energy system, and yes, you can purchase more of it if you run out, but it doesn't feel forced and the energy replenishes fast enough that you can grind through levels at a pretty reasonable clip. I've been playing it for about 2-3 weeks and haven't felt like I've been pushed to purchase anything, and have a team that I feel is actually fairly strong. Does the game slow down after a while? Somewhat, but not frustratingly so - the progression feels difficult, but fair.

But yeah! Try this game if you're interested, it's fun.
