Very few designs I've been seeing lately for cartoons are appealing to me. It's either really generic cute or stuff like this that has variety, but looks kind eh.

Also what's with CGI not taking advantage of color theory when it's way easier than live-action? This poster looks awful.

Boxtrolls was gorgeous, but then it was also stop motion.

Oh for... If you have to watch animation that looks like Disney, why don't you just stick to Disney instead of expecting all other studios to ape them? GDI

I don't want it to look like Disney, I just found some of the characters to be offputting in a way that I've never run into with a Disney movie, and it really threw me out of the film.

"wish they could've gone for more Disney*ish"

(Anonymous) 2014-11-23 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes? But that's not the same and wishing it looked completely like a Disney movie, or hating it enough that I would rather just watch a Disney movie?

I thought the kids in the museum looked really weird, same with the security gard, or whoever he was. But once they got into the main setting and characters, I think it improved and everything looked waay better and less awkward.
Personally though, I think Book of Life could of looked a lot more nicer if it were in 2D instead of 3D.

Yeah, it was weird, because the museum world was where the people were supposed to look more "human" vs. the story world where the people intentionally looked like wooden dolls, but I found the people in the museum world to look more uncanny? Like, with how the museum lady's hair looked like plastic, and moved all at the same time. But then there were the people in the story world who were just off, like General Posada, like I mentioned.

I would be interested in a 2D version, I'll admit, though I didn't dislike the CGI. I thought the CGI was really interesting in certain scenes, like the labyrinth one, and I personally don't think it would have looked as cool in 2D, but that could just be me.

I didn't want it to look Disneyish. I just wanted it to look...better. I found the styling in this movie really offputting and it got in the way of me being able to enjoy it.

I'm hearing a lot of 'this didn't cater to my white US sensibilities there for the art was bad'.

The art wasn't bad, though! I liked a lot of it! But not all of it. /shrug
