Yes, seconding all of this.

Unless asked explicitly for honest concrit, I never offer any. A couple of my friends are very sensitive and easily lose faith in themselves; I wouldn't want that at all.

This is why I'd never offer to beta for total strangers, tbh. If I don't know how they tend to react to feedback generally then it's like wandering around a minefield, and like you said, you really don't want to damage anyone's confidence.
