I wish there was a clearer division between fandom friends and people you could discuss deep, personal things with. Not to say it's bad if the first leads to the second, but in my experience, there have been too many times people seem to think the first implies the second right off the bat.

I sort of agree. When I add people to my friends list in friending memes, and before I'm even clear on their names they've unloaded all of these deeply personal things onto their flist, which can be overwhelming if that's all they talk about, underwhelming if the personal things aren't bad, just TMI or boring accounts of things they did that day.

+1000! I actually wish people just stopped assuming that they're "friends" with me until we have explicitly discussed the matter. I do not randomly grant the status of a friend to anyone; either they must ask me to do it (and I may or may not agree) or I will ask them first.

I think that is..entirely up to you. To me, especially in r/l, the division is quite clea.
