I will generally not watch or read things set in a "realistic" setting, even if it's good. There are exceptions, but over 90% of media I consume is not set in our universe/time.

I don't mind it if it's in our universe or time, but it does bother me when it goes into alternative universe territory. Just make it an AU. Like if Aliens take over Washington DC - clearly it doesn't really take place in our world anymore, because that never happened. (Well... Tea Partiers might claim it did, but that's another story.)

I meant more for canon material - but yeah, nothing wrong with a well-written AU. You don't have to limit yourself to be canon-complacent.

AYRT - No no, I meant canon too. Maybe I should have said parallel universe?

Ah, sorry for the confusion. I just never heard the term "AU" used in that sense outside of fanfic, but maybe that is just me.

Yeah, so going back to my original point, it just stretches it to me when nothing in the story indicates that it's supposed to be a different reality, and yet all of these things happen outside of ours. Obviously there's going to be some things that don't fit, artistic license and all that, but aliens is a little much.

But…don't you love The Winter Soldier? That's pretty much a realistic setting with a couple super soldiers thrown in.

It's Marvelverse, though.

It's a place where people have superpowers, can survive being preserved in ice for decades, that has amazing tech our world doesn't have etc.

I'm not saying they all have to be blue aliens on the other side of the universe, but I'd be a lot less interested in Winter Soldier if it was a regular action flick without superhero stuff.

Same...chances are I can walk out my door or read a newspaper for a "gritty, realistic" story.

It's one of the reasons I never got past the first season of finished Breaking Bad also haven't even seen OITNB. I KNOW it's well-written, but the setting doesn't draw me - also: realistically annoying people.

I've put down a lot of fantasy books that seemed interesting until I read they took place in this world, like in an alternate version of London or whatever the fuck. Boring. If you're gonna say it's an alternate timeline and literally nothing from real history influences the setting then just make it a new place.

I'm very much the same. Like if there's a bit of a twist to the setting like an urban fantasy or superheroes I can enjoy it, but if it's set 100% in the real world I often loose interest, part of the reason why I don't really watch many cop shows.

Yeah, same - that and so much cop shows are so formulaic.
