This is FS; that doesn't really surprise me.

Part of it's also due to the fact that a lot (not all, but a good number) of authors seem to think that making a character a POC or a woman somehow automatically gives them ingrained character traits. And IT DOESN"T. But so many authors act as though writing a woman means she's already filled in with a generic "woman" personality (like when you see the Five-Man Band trope on TVtropes and one of them is listed as "The Chick").

At least with white guys, since they've been the default for so long, authors are basically FORCED to give them at least a couple defining character traits.

Why not seek out better-written stories, then?

I do.

But part of my problem is there are a lot of stories that feature these poorly drawn POC and female characters. And a lot of people in fandom simply don't want to accept that I just don't care about them because I find them poorly written. There are, indeed, works with great female and POC characters. And I adore them and could give some recommendations there. But I think you'll agree that there are lots of other works that just have damn poor writing/boring characters for anyone that isn't a white guy. And it gets tiring trying to explain that to people.

So, quite often, I'll join a fandom that's basically all white males so that I can get my hate and squee on in peace without someone trying to analyze my motivations and tell me I have internalized misogyny or that I've internalized white supremacy and am self-hating.

The work might be good, but I've found I'm far less likely to nope the fuck out of a fandom where basically all the characters are white males because there's no social justice analyzing of why you like/dislike a character going on. The hate and love flow freely.

While depending on the context, this position may be kind of skeevy, I wish more people realized that no one can care about every single issue. Maybe the anon cares about something else too deeply to be invested in fictional representation in any way.

I've seen these "lmao it's as if you can't care about many things simultaneously" posts, and they make me a little angry. Because YES, sometimes you can't.

...that was literally my point? That it's not inherently bad to not care about any given issue? And that there isn't necessarily anything wrong with the fact that the OP does not care about diversity and representation, because maybe they simply haven't the emotional resources to care?

Yes, to me it's kind of bad, because it means you probably don't care about the actual rights of minorities, make "get back in the kitchen" and other jokes, etc.

Actually no, it's because I think that people FAR too often treat representation as a solution when it's a symptom of a larger societal issue rather than a cause. And, quite frankly, I'd honestly prefer if my racial group (Middle-Eastern people) were LESS represented because for me it's a choice between Kim Kardashian or a terrorist. And I honestly think NO representation would be better than that.

If the extent to which you advocate for women and POC is the internet then I have no time for you or your bullshit.

Yeah, media representation can help, but I don't care about it because I think, fundamentally, it doesn't do a damn thing to address underlying inequalities in society that are the basis for the lack of representation in the first place.

There's no direct connection between the two.
