Wank isn't just stuff that's "old news" though. It's not just "unpopular opnion."

Wank is deliberately inflammatory, usually to kick off one section of a fandom against the other for pointless drama. It's not even discussion (although its existence can certainly spark this off). It's wank. A meaningless, self-serving circle-jerk.

Thing is though I've seen discussions labeled "wank" that looked to me more like inexperienced newbies wanting to discuss a potential minefield more than anything. And then being shouted down because they didn't know.
