Sherlock is monastic not asexual. This has been stated repeatedly by the ptb. He doesn't have relationships because they take time away from his work.

While I accept anything the creators say as canon and so for me, Sherlock as an asexual character is ruined, not all fans are like this. Some prefer to treat the plausibility of different interpretations of the text as being independent of the authorial intent.
