It's fine if it's one or two people. But when everyone seems to get with their teenaged sweetheart, it's very obviously because the author isn't creative enough.

I don't think so. I'd rather get that than a random new character in the epilogue.

I should have specified that this is mostly aimed at fantasy. If it's something like John Green's stuff which is firmly set in reality and the teenagers break up then I get that. But if it's fantasy where there was some bigger plot then I want to know about the established ships that were built up during the story.

Because why do they have to be married to an established character? Does it matter that much you know a ton of details about them?

Like, Naruto. Half the pairings make zero sense, one is with a character who should have been executed or jailed but was left off, all so there could be a Babies Ever After ending.

Basically, not everyone needs to get married and have kids, and it shows an extreme lack of creativity that this is often the focus. Jobs are mentioned in passing if at all, it's always about the kids.

Because if the relationship was established during the story, then I'd rather see that relationship through, not have a wishy-washy "oh well they didn't work out" and then see a character I'm potentially invested in paired with a blank slate. I took your comment to mean that every established pairing in the story ended up together, not that you were talking about a pair the spares scenario.

And I'd rather not have an epilogue that's there just to show who married whom at all. What a concept.

Me too. I don't see where I demanded every series have a romantic epilogue though; I'm talking about works that have one for some unfortunate reason.
