I've had the same experience as you, btw, and I would always try to make my suggestions as gentle as possible. Still, I was assuming that the author wanted the story to be everything it could be, and my job was to help them tighten and sharpen until it gleamed like a diamond. I don't assume that anymore. Now I only offer SPaG unless explicitly asked.

I still long to find a beta who could give my stories a proper editing, though. (I don't need SPaG, unless it's to correct my Oxford commas...)
