Bullshit. Absolute bullshit. There are people out there, they're just gunshy.

They're very thin on the ground though. I agree that being gunshy is a factor, but there's also the fact that a good proportion of people offering to be betas (or agreeing to if a friend asks them) just don't know the amount of work and time it entails, and either back out/break off contact/do a half-assed job.

Of course, a lot of writers don't realize the work and time it entails either, and may post their work anyway because they get tired of waiting.

Yeah, but the vast majority of betas who don't know the author are SPAG betas only, for many reasons including time. If you want more feedback, you need to find somebody who does that for a living.
