For me, it's the difference in writing style between the fic and the comments, when they're by the same person, and on the same page, but they look so different.

When I reply to comments, I tend to mirror the style of the person commenting. Not to an extreme, but I definitely follow their lead when it comes to formality, evident level of enthusiasm, that kind of stuff. So someones who writes a long, formal comment gets a reply in kind, but someone who writes a very brief, very informal comment with lots of all-caps/emoticons/exclamation points will probably get "Thanks so much!!" or or "I'm glad you liked it :DD" or something like that. It's just a habit at this point.
