Taeko Watanabe is incredible. Her attention to detail alone is worth the read (everyone is wearing their hair according to their caste! Everybody's family crest is researched as close as possible!), and while she fictionalizes the main character, she's stuck very close to known facts. Personally my favorite "historical liberty" was her take on the Ikedaya Incident, in which she explained that the legend that everyone already knew made no sense at all, and compensated splendidly.
