Well, having sex doesn't teach you how to write. Only writing teaches you how to write.

SA - also, very pretty secret

No, but it teaches you experience. You could still write about it in a shitty way, but at least you know what you're writing about.

That being said, some people are good at research. I once did extensive research about taxidermy for a story - turns out you don't need to stuff animals to write about it. I'm guessing the same is true for sex.

That and, fanfic smut (especially the slash kind) is often nog exactly known for its realism - it's wish fulfillment.

Yeah... I've found that virginity accounts for practically nothing when it comes to whether someone's good or not at writing sex scenes.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-26 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Well... I don't know about that. It can depend on the talent of the writer, but I've seen some people get basic anatomy wrong. For example, someone described a hymen "shattering into a million pieces." The rest of the fic was surprisingly readable but that part, just NOPE. Took me completely out of the story.

There's also the issue of dirty talk. I sincerely wonder if a person has had sex with another human being if they can make some of the stuff that comes out of their characters' mouths happen. Again, I've seen it bad enough (within pretty well written stories) that I just have to hit the back button.

I've been there before. Honestly, I suspect most of the readers are virgins, too.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-26 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Virgins writing smutfic, even good smut, isn't that uncommon I think. If you can write you an write. (Also personally I use my sexual frustration to write smutfic, hah.)

(Anonymous) 2014-11-26 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
Good Lord, sexual frustration makes for good smutspiration.

Not all popular smutfics are good, unfortunately. I've read some pretty lame ones written by virgins and non-virgins, so your sexual status isn't a guarantee of quality (or lack of quality).

(Anonymous) 2014-11-26 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Plenty of people write about murder but never kill anyone. They write about pirates or soldiers or cops or scientists but they've never been one. They write about adventures but they stay at home. They write one gender when they're another.

I never understood why people out there seen to draw the line at virgins writing about sex. Sex is not a unique and mystical thing, it can be researched and read about and understood without actually participating, just like plenty of other things.

Don't worry, OP. You're a writer who knows their stuff. You don't have to act on those things to do that.

Having had sex doesn't mean you're any good at writing sex scenes - I suck at them.

Also, most fic sex isn't realistic, so no worries there.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-26 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Its okay, so will most of your readers be. Smut!Fic is for people who are involuntary!asexuals.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-26 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
oh you poor butthurt baby

(Anonymous) 2014-11-26 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
really? I pretty much disagree with that.

The whole "virgins can't write hot porn" thing is so 2006. I always wonder why it's persisted so long.

tbh being not experienced with a partner myself makes me wonder what is fantasy and what is reality- for example how long people in fics take to orgasm.

actual genitals on genitals action is built up and built up... and I'm sitting there wondering, do I come too fast when masturbating? what sort of stimulation can they take?

I wrote some popular smutfic when I was a virgin, OP. The way I felt about it is probably similar to the way you felt -- I was simultaneously happy and concerned that I was a fraud.

But, look: there are a lot of virgins out there who are writing smut. And there are a lot of virgins who are reading it. No worries.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-26 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
eh, I'm asexual and I write a lot of really popular smutfic. I'm a good writer, is all.

If you're a good enough writer, and know how to do your research, there's very little you can't write well, even if you don't have much personal experience with it. Unless you're talking about some really off-the-wall specific niche sort of things that only the top experts in the field will know about.

Apparently, so people have told me, I'm pretty good with writing scenes involving drug usage. I've never used an illegal drug in my life, and I don't even personally know someone who has. *shrug*
But then I really suck when it comes to writing about cars and stuff, which I also don't have experience with beyond just driving places, so. :p

(Anonymous) 2014-11-26 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Some of the people with the worst knowledge about anatomy and sex I've met have been non-virgins, tbh.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-26 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
What difference does that make? I reckon a lot of smut writers are virgins. No need to make a big deal over something no one knows about anyway.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-26 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
And this is news... How? Plenty of people who haven't had sex write smut. This is nothing new or special.
