Can the word "trigger" be applied to anxiety?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-26 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Something I was thinking about last night, there were a lot of people on tumblr refusing to tag their Ferguson/Michael Brown stuff last night because it's important!

On the flip side, there were posts going around about how it's okay to block Ferguson/Michael Brown stuff if it's a trigger.

I don't have PTSD, but I do have anxiety issues, and things like Ferguson (the feeling of helplessness, mostly) really mess with me, to the point where I have physical reactions to it.

Would that be a trigger? Or, since it's just anxiety, is there a different word for it?

Absolutely that's a trigger.

Absolutely it's not.

Thank you, I'll look into this.

It isn't a trigger. BUT it does cause anxiety and if people are not asses they would tag their shit.

Define physical reactions?

I mean, trigger is a word that used to have an actual meaning, but since you're talking about a tumblr context that might be a moot point anyway.

Headaches, severe cramps, and rarely vomiting.

And, I know that these aren't period related, as I'm on the pill.

That's not trigger - that's a stressor. Someone once pointed to a site that explains the difference here. In practice, they can be similar - but it does help to not further expand the meaning of trigger. Google for it, see if it fits you.

I don't have triggers as far as I know, but I do have stressors and I very much know what you mean by physical reaction.

Someone else linked it above, so I'm going to look into it. Thank you.

Just a thought anon, but if you suffer with anxiety, maybe try not spending so much time on social media anyway?

I'm not trying to be snarky. It's been shown that spending a lot of time on facebook, tumblr, etc can increase you anxiety and depression levels.

I've thought about that, and I've already cut mostly everything else out of my life, I don't twitter, and I only have facebook to keep up with my family members, but I don't actually use it otherwise. Tumblr is the only social media site I use with any regularity, and usually I can handle it. Plus I have a lot of really genuinely good friends there, and I don't want to cut them out completely.

Thank you for your concern, though. :)

It's pretty much proof that the assholes who insist you tag even the most mundane things don't actually care about triggers when it's about their pet issue.

"Make sure you tag for food, someone might have an eating disorder! By the way I'm going to post constantly about murder and violence and call you a racist if you don't like seeing it."

Pretty fucking much. I saw someone saying that they were glad that people were getting triggered because of all the Ferguson stuff because 'it's important.'
