Save for the V-Pet-based Japan-only games, that's about as good as you're going to get.

Yeah, Digimon World always felt the closest to the core of the series for me -- one kid, one monster partner, exploring the Digital World, with evolutions based on how you treated your partner. Haven't tried Re:Digitize or Decode yet, since there's no English version, but it would be interesting, I'm sure.
