I'm not saying that the destruction is right, but I think we should all take a step back and think about why the actions of a very small minority of people reacting to the situation are defining the way "the rest of the country" views "the black community" as a whole. We don't talk about riots driven by white people that way at all-- as a reflection of all white people, or even of the small subset of white people responsible (e.g. riots after sporting events don't reflect poorly on all fans of the team). People reacting to Ferguson, in contrast, are expressing frustration, rage, and fear at the fact that the officials of our country can shoot unarmed citizens and get away with (in fact, profit to the tune of a half million dollars from) it. So I guess I think the discourse should be a little more humane, a little more forgiving, than it has been.

Tell that to the innocent business owners whose shops have been burned down because a guilty thug got his comeuppance.
