I don't get it. Maybe because I like many characters who are my opposite. I'm white but I don't identify or relate to white characters with dark hair, green eyes and porcelain skin only. I relate to a character because of their personality foremost, I don't require them to look like me. I can understand not relating to different cultures than yours but race had never been a factor in why I like characters.

I have a feeling you have no problem relating to characters who are supernatural or aliens.
I bet, also, no one said you a thing if you write about white ppl only.
If they did, maybe they did it for a different reason. E.g., whitewashing poc characters, belittle non white characters in favor of a white one, take the story of a poc character, including relationship dynamics, and give them to your fave or a Mary sue self insert white character .. and so on any kind of behavior that might come across as someone having a problem with non white characters.
