34 OP here. Rose was ok at first, but she progressively got more annoying as the show went on. I started to hate Martha 'cause of the lame crush thing, which also made me dislike Ten for leading her on, etc.

ITA about the romance thing on the show, though. Actually, it seems to be less about the Doctor and more about DT and how EVERYONE is supposed to be in love with him. Some of us don't fancy him, you know!

I completely agree. I like Martha, and liked season 1!Rose, but the romance aspect of the show did none of the characters any favors and made them look silly in the end. I mean Rose couldn't *live* without the Doctor at the end, or so she thought. That's supposed to be some fantastically romantic relationship?

And no, the Doctor/Rose shippers and their "Doctor and Rose had the most touching, greatest, heart-warming romance ever which totally defines modern DW and anyone who disagrees doesn't understand the show" aren't going to convince me otherwise.

Think people liked Doctor/Rose because she was "joe anybody". She wasn't some glamarous babe from the high life or a fantastically intellectual selfless heroine. She was an average girl, with an average life waiting for the day something better came along... Because lets face it, that's most of us.

So of course everyone's heart went out to her, they all wanted the girl next door to be the love of the 900 (sorry, 903) year old alien time travellers life--someone they could see themselves being. Many would scream MARY SUE!!!!1111 but you know, Russell T. Davies admitted she was written in a way that enabled the viewer to become her and see themselves as the Doctor's companion. The fact she became so much more to many fans is a testament to Billie Piper's acting skill I think but that's an entirely different kettle of fish.

I don't think the Doctor and Rose's romance defines the show, but it has ended up defining the Doctor. Which I think is wrong (and yes, check out the icons I am a Doctor/Rose fan.)
It would of been easier on the fans for him to move on and let Rose go and Martha being a traditional companion-- in it for the adventure and not trying to get in his pants rather than than dotting all these little references to Rose in series 3 keeping them holding on for what will ultimately never ever happen, no matter how much we might want it to. Rose and the Doctor will not end up together! They just can't and if they do it just wouldn't be Doctor Who anymore.

It's sad but true... Their romance was always going to come to a tragic ending and while their chemistry, cute banter and feelings towards each other made for a great TV romance for a couple of years, I just feel for the fans new to the show--the ones who truly don't understand it and didn't see it coming from the start.

All that said however, I am still a sucker for a good romance and will avidly await Rose's return in series 4. It will break my heart again, I'm in NO doubt but I'll watch anyway! But when she's gone again I'll carry on watching and hoping at least, the Doctor will take a break from canoodling with the natives. *rolls eyes*

Speaking of the little refs to Rose, I always thought it would be funny if Ten had flashbacks to the Master in VotD like he did in TRB (for example he sees a blond man dancing and angsts about it in the same way). hahaha.

I just feel for the fans new to the show--the ones who truly don't understand it and didn't see it coming from the start.

You know, maybe you're right. I saw a few episodes from series 2 first, and I just wasn't feeling the Doctor/Rose romantic chemistry, they came off as best friends more than two people who were in love. When I watched season 1, I felt it, I loved their chemistry, I liked that this powerful Time Lord was falling for a normal, average girl, I squeed when they danced together. If I watched the show from the beginning, or in sequence, maybe I would be a shipper.

After being disappointed that Rose was coming back, I can't wait for her to come back, too. She needs a proper goodbye and closure, and I want to see if she's grown up and moved on. If she's still in the same place emotionally as she was at the end of Doomsday, I'll be a little upset.
