How can you... NOT see a family dynamic in E/F? Oh, sure, it's not the usual, but they were raised together since Franziska was 2 years old XD; and there's the credits scene in JFA and in 3-5, the earthquake bit where Franziska was being all "Edgey, go to your room" and HUGELY big-sister-ish. Plus the fact that she outright calls him brother >_>

3-5 in particular bashed me over the head with it. I mean, they're very non traditional, and their affection is certainly twisted in its own way, but it's definitely there.

(Also, as cute as FranShoe could be, I can't break up Gummy and Maggey ;_; )

Refering to each other with familial terms isn't enough to make them "family". Phoenix and Maya act much more like brother and sister than they do, even when ~~the game~~ Pearl is trying to beat you over the head with them as lovers.

I'll give you the JFA credits, but the interaction in 3-5 doesn't read as familial for me at all. Rivals, yes. Hatesex, yes. Begruding friendship, yes. Family, no.

Oh, no, I agree, P/M act like much more -traditional- siblings, you're totally right there :P

E/F aren't normal siblings, and given who raised them under those conditions, they shouldn't be. But there's no mistaking that there is an affection there--Franziska's entire reason for coming to America in JFA was to put Miles Edgeworth back on the path she thought he'd fallen from. (Well, that and to prove herself against Phoenix, but Miles was a huge reason)

And you don't think Franziska's speech towards Edgeworth when he was freaking out over the earthquake was sisterly? It sort of bashed me over the head with it. Like Edgeworth's stuff towards her in JFA ending, it was "you're better than this, master yourself." It's not coddling, it's very 'tough love,' but I can't see it as anything but familial.

Of course, especially with Franziska -> Edgeworth, there's a lot more. I do think she does see him as a bit of a rival, and she kind of resents him, but he's a huge part of her life and she does call him "little brother" for a reason >_>

At the risk of accusing you of interrogating the text from the wrong perpective, what I'm reading here is that you really want them to be siblings, and are interpreting everything that happens to them as evidence of their sibling relationship. That's all well and good, but that's just not how I see it.

I could... sort of see that, except I didn't know a thing about JFA before I played it, and it sort of hit me over the head with it. :/

No, when I first saw Franziska, I assumed that perhaps they were giving Edgeworth a love interest. The airport scene proved to me beyond a doubt that that's not what was meant at all. That's not to say "no one is allowed to ship it!" but at the same time, I thought it was pretty patently obvious they were going for a sibling dynamic. (And, apparantly fandom agrees--LJ isn't exactly burning up the charts with fic for them.)

My sister once tied me up with a bunch of belts and stuff, and I had to get my mom to untie me. XD We had a very combative relationship while I was growing up (and the age difference was about the same as Edgey/Fran). There's a lot of rivalry in their relationship, but I don't see any romantic tension at all - or even hate, really. Franziska says she hates Edgeworth and wants to beat him, but she also bitches out Phoenix for "killing the prosecutor in him" and is concerned about him when the earthquake hits and generally just does a lot of things that indicate a certain protective feeling that doesn't quite fit as anything but a familial feeling. It's really very screwed up in a lot of ways, but that's because Franziska is screwed up. I'd want to prove myself too if in my very tiny formative years my father brought a new favored apprentice into the house and raised him like a son.

It's a very screwed-up family dynamic, but it is family. And given how screwed up they both are, well. XD
