Names

Do your online friends know your real name? Do you share it with your beta or the author/artist you whose work you enjoy? How long until you do reveal it--or do you never share it?

I share my first name with everyone who wants to know it, as it is a fairly common name and it's really the only name I identify with. I would also share my initials for my middle and last names, but as there are currently only 88 people in my country that share my last name I wouldn't give that up unless I really, really knew them.

Or actually, I gave away my full name and address to a Tumblr giveaway, so I guess I'm willing to do it if I get free stuff for it.

I am with you on this. There are NINE people in the country that share my last name. So they have to either be CLOSE online friends or... yeah, well, free stuff. :b

I share my name if someone wants to know it. And I'll offer it back if someone else gives me theirs first when introducing themselves. Otherwise I don't really go out of my way to avoid it but I don't really think of it either.

I don't think I've told anyone my real name. Maybe a person I beta'd for awhile ago.

I only ever share my real name when I know I'm about to meet someone in person for an extended period of time.

First name, yes. Middle name - on some more personal platforms (I go by firstmiddle). Last name, never ever.

I have no plans to share it.

Considering that for several years early in my days of internet fandom, I ran a weekly column on a pretty popular gaming news site, I have never tried to keep my real name a secret. Cat's been out of the bag for a LONG time. I try not to use my full name in specifically fandom spaces, but mostly so I don't run into a situation where say my conservative and literally paranoid/mentally ill mom googles me and comes across my smutty kink meme fics.

But, you know, I'm cool with people knowing it. *points to icon*

First name, yes. It was in the top ten baby names the year I was born. My middle name I shared on my lj to my private friends list. My last name is somewhat rare so the farthest I've ever gone in fandom is to say what it means in English. Anyone from fandom that I've friended on Facebook knows it though, and anyone I've done gift exchanges/bought or sold something with will know it because I am not going to mar my beautiful address labels by blacking out my last name.

Only a few that I've gotten to know really really well, and even then it took quite a few months, or in some cases, years.
