I've always wondered why people have such a problem with AUs - setting is just another thing to play with, another what-if to explore. It's not like they don't sometimes do it in canon (Moonlighting (Taming of the Shrew), Friends (everyone makes different choices), Castle (Noir, and one where he and Beckett never met), NewsRadio (Titanic), Stargate et al (too many to name), etc.).
