TW for body/medical TMI

(Anonymous) 2014-11-29 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sebaceous_cyst

I hate these fuckers and get them regularly, usually under my breasts where the underwire is, or in the crease between thighs/genitalia. The minor ones are like a large zit that eventually goes away, but every once in a while I get a really gross, swollen one that pops, again like a giant zit. Nothing I do seems to help, and yes, I do maintain good personal hygiene with daily showers, scrubbing and soap.

I just wanted to share that because they make me sad. Does anyone else have this problem?

Have you seen a dermatologist? I don't know what they'd be able to do to help, but that doesn't seem like an entirely normal phenomenon.

No. I was under the impression they're not uncommon and not particularly dangerous (unless you get a really huge infected one) just inconvenient and painful. I've had one treated by my regular doctor before, though.

I do, somewhat...but I love the popping.

Squeezing them is kinda satisfying, but I'd still rather not get them. :( Especially when they're in the thigh crease area or labia because that hurts like a mofo.

Amen to that.

Me too!

Yeah I get them. I got a pretty big one on my head right now (pilar cyst). I wish it would go away.

My sympathies. Don't those require minor surgery? I'm really sorry. :(

Very, very minor surgery. Local anesthetic and all that. Supposed to only take like 15 minutes. But I don't think insurance covers it.

That sucks, I'm sorry. :( I have a cyst that might require minor surgery eventually, otherwise it's like to reoccur and it won't fully go away on its own.

Possibly. I get a lot of pseudo-acne stuff, most of it keratosis pilaris... and then I compulsively pop them like pimples until my arms are covered in scabs.

Twice now I've had a tiny cyst like this (under my arm) that required medical attention. The first was much more painful, the second wasn't so bad after the initial extraction. (Which was slightly traumatic, haha. The worst thing was changing the bandages and waiting for the wound to heal.)

I think some people are just more likely to get them. Maybe it's genetics, I have no clue.

I've also had a couple that, er...went away on their own as well, and while uncomfortable I don't think those are anything to worry about. If it's worrying you, or you get one that doesn't want to go away or bothers you overmuch, I'd say see a dermatologist.

Yep. Always on the inside of my leg. Way, way up high.

Ugh, that sounds uncomfortable and no fun. I've never heard of anyone getting them there - both my dad and sister get them, but only on their scalps. My dad once had to go in and have them surgically removed because they got so big.

TBH I don't know if what I have is that, or something worse. I have tons of tiny little cysts around my labia and the doctor just keeps telling me they're normal and will go away on their own, or are not a problem even if they don't, but... why do I keep getting /more/? Only once did one get to a point where it popped, the rest are so tiny and under the skin that it just feels bumpy and the paranoid side of me worries I have cancer or something. I just... I'm sorry you have something too... I feel your pain, but have no idea what to tell you.

na

I've had the same problem for the past few months; apparently a lot of women do. I know they're harmless, but I'm just so embarrassed about it. I'm even a little nervous about having sex with someone now because of it. They aren't a huge eyesore or anything, but they are noticeable and I'm afraid that someone's automatic thought would be that they're an STD symptom or something

Very much TMI and kinda gross. You have been warned.

I get little ones infrequently, but a few times a year. I got one on my back a few years ago, though, that got infected. And very, very, very swollen. It was so swollen that when I finally got to see the clinic dermatologist, he couldn't believe it and asked to be able to take pictures for documentation. (It was about the size of a softball.) He used tons of local anesthetic and popped it. The gauze from draining it piled more than a foot high on the counter. And an entire bottle of packing material wasn't enough to fill the hole, but medically, he was not allowed to use more.

So, I guess, be thankful yours don't get that bad? I do understand that they suck, though. Although I kinda like popping the ones on my breasts. (The labia ones hurt too much to be as satisfying.)
