Well, forgetting to lock the door happens. And to my knowledge break and enters don't usually happen by lock picking?
If you think you did lock the door, and no one else has the key to your place, just looks for signs of entry and keep your phone on you. Be safe anon, but I highly doubt someone is in your house.

Assuming you found the door unlocked when you were expecting it to be locked? Someone who snuck into the house through a locked door would have locked it again behind them.

If that doesn't calm the worries, what I would do is probably call a friend and talk to them on the phone while checking the house.

This, though preferably someone who lives close or knows emergency contact info in the unlikely case something IS wrong - but I've freaked myself out many times and nothing has been.

I forget to lock the door all the time. When I find it unlocked, I lock it then I search the house -- it has three floors and lots of nooks and crannies -- telling myself that if I'm going to die, I'm going to die fighting.

But I think it's very, very unlikely that anyone would pick the lock, close the door behind him and lie in wait (except in Criminal Minds or Luther). It's more likely they'd con their way in, or smash their way in and rush me.
