OMG a favorite fic of mine just updated after a 10 YEAR HIATUS

Holy shit, this gives me so much delight you can't imagine. And while I can't prove this had anything to do with the update, a couple months ago I had left a detailed, appreciative review on that fic -- years after any other reviewer had reviewed it -- saying how much I enjoyed and loved the fic even though it was an abandoned WIP. And then, lo and behold, a couple months later, today? A NEW CHAPTER. Coincidence? Maybe, but what if it isn't?

Moral of the story: it's never too late to review a fic, and never too late for a review to be appreciated by the author!

Wow! Did they happen to explain their long absence? Also, what fandom was this? Wondering if it was a fic I've heard of (but I've only been active in two fandoms, and one is really huge while the other is very small, so I don't think it's too likely).

That's great.

But, I can't stop thinking about those authors who withhold chapters until they get x amount of reviews.

I seriously doubt anyone would hold up a fic for 10 years to get reviews.

DA - Yeah, my guess it was a weird coincidence, or the review reminded them they'd never updated the fic. It is possible that they'd finished the WIP, but something happened that it never got posted, it wasn't reviewed again after a while, and they just forgot. Or it was a crazy random happenstance.

Or maybe the review got them to think about the fic again, and they came up with some new ideas as a result. I know this has happened to me before (not after 10 years, though.)

Those authors are bad apples, anon. You can let them ruin the whole barrel for you if you want, but... why?

How nice!

I have two long-abondoned WIPs, one of which still gets quite a bit of traffic. Believe me, I still enjoy getting the odd new review on them, but no number of reviews will ever make me take it up again. Not for any "withholding" type reason; just that I've grown up since, I write completely differently, and I'm not in that fandom anymore. I'm sorry if it disappoints readers, but at least they're clearly labeled as abandoned WIPs?

But if I got a "detailed, appreciative review" like yours on either one now, I would probably reply and thank them though. :)
