Is it really supposed to be aspirational?
The lyrics of the song say "Your jobs a joke, you're broke, your love life's D.O.A.", and that does define a lot of their situations throughout the series.

Of course, in time they end up finding better jobs sometimes and better relationships, but to me it looked like it was about the daily struggles of actually not-so-unluncky 20-to-30-somethings. (because really, truly unfortunate 20-somethings wouldn't share a flat like Monica and Rachel's...)
