Magic is might

So are muggle weapons, but if you said that, say, America was better than the rest of the world because it had nuclear bombs, and thus America is superior, you'd get shot down, and rightly so.

And on that note, muggles have really terrifying weaponry, so that's a point in the favor of muggles. Another one is that, while wizards have floo, brooms, and teleportation (of various types), they also have to rely on muggle tech that they've altered for transportation, because wizarding travel has a lot of limitations: Floo? You can only go to a place that's also connected to the Floo network. Brooms? You can only carry so many people at a time. Portkeys? Can be messed with/altered. Apparation? Can only take so many people at once, and has to be done by a skilled user, or else splinching. Muggle tech is superior for carrying large groups of people, it's why the wizards use magicked trains, boats, carriages, cars, etc. instead of having a proper wizarding equivalent.

But wizards can learn how to use Muggle weapons. There's nothing inherently stopping Draco Malfoy from learning science or how to fire a gun. But a muggle will never be able to use the killing curse.

That's what I mean -- Wizards are INHERENTLY better when compared to Muggles. Their stupid dogmatism has prevented them from taking advantage of science and technology, but they COULD. A muggle will NEVER be able to use spells. But a wizard COULD use a gun.

nayrt

No.

"inherently more powerful" =/= "inherently better"

Powerful might not be the right word. But I don't see how you can say they're not inherently better. One can do basically everything the other version can AND THEN SOME.

Being powerful and being able to do everything another person can do and then more DOES NOT MAKE YOU BETTER THAN THAT PERSON.

You are not better than a wheelchair-bound person because you can do everything that person can do and also walk.

You are not better than a blind person because you can do everything a blind person can do and also see.

Power does not make you "inherently better."

It certainly gives you more potential.

The point I'm trying to make is simply this: you can't compare wizards looking down on Muggles to white people looking down on black people because the former is actually rooted in reality while the latter isn't.

Re: Kind of an off-topic question but...

(Anonymous) 2014-11-30 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you insane? Of course it is rooted in reality.

Do you honestly think disabled people -- i.e., people who cannot do as many things as other people can do, whether physically or mentally -- have never been discriminated against on the basis of that disability? Treated as though they were inferior and that their needs were undeserving of accommodation? Locked up for it, even? It happens in reality all the goddamn time.

No, wizards looking down on muggles is not exactly like racism. Pure-bloods looking down on muggle-borns is more like racism, though (although, really, more like religious intolerance or cultural intolerance, since muggle-borns can pass for pure-bloods.)

High five!

Of course they have experienced discrimination. But the point remains that there is a REASON people feel devastated when they're disabled by an accident. And that's because they're losing something. Or when parents find out their kid is disabled, they grieve. And if you had a way to fix it, they would take it. That doesn't mean they love their kid less, but that doesn't make their grief and pain illegitimate either.

But the parallels in the books have been more towards racism anyway, which is completely illogical to me.

You really need to do some research into the persecution of disabled people throughout history so you can see why you're being offensive.

It seems like you don't know a whole lot about disabilities, which is understandable; nobody's born knowing everything, and there are a lot of people who feel this way. But speaking as a disabled person, this is a really unpleasant, regressive attitude. I'm not somehow inferior because I can't do certain things that able-bodied people can. An able-bodied person is not inherently better or more valuable than me, and it's honestly pretty awful of you to say so.

You know what you CAN compare this situation to, though? People looking down on the mentally disabled. By your logic, those with no disabilities are inherently "better" than those WITH disabilities (since they "can do everything the other version can and then some").

Potential shouldn't even figure among the freaking criteria when you're comparing two human beings in terms of worth.

if you're a wizard, you can have tons of power and be able to do a million things muggles can't... but you can also be a shit awful person who only wants to use their skills for evil.

is voldemort "better" than a muggle? he can do "AND THEN SOME". he can also kill thousands of innocent people he deems unworthy including other wizards. how is that "better"?

But the Malfoys would never 'lower' themselves by using Muggle weapons.
