as someone with both ships and sports teams, i don't think that's accurate. i feel pretty different about the ships I have versus the teams I have. i don't really root for ships - i have feelings about ships. it's very different.

They might be different for you, but hardcore shippers are basically the same as hardcore sports fans. Follow the players/actors, buy the merchandise, hate the other teams, white knight the people involved when rape accusations come up, talk loudly about ships/sports even if no one around them cares, etc. Casual fans of either are very different in comparison.
