Re: Things that really annoy you right now

In fairness, I think this is an important case to bring up when it comes to street harassment -- it illustrates why women just telling guys to stop isn't always an option.

But using it as an excuse to hate on men/foreigners is despicable.

The thing is: There were several cases in the past that were very similar - assholes attacking innocent people, someone stepping in and getting killed because of it. The fact that it was women in this single case but not in any of the others means that it was not, in fact, a case of gender based violence. Reducing it to "men getting violent when women tell them no" grossly misrepresents the problem: That regardless of sex, ethnicity and class of the victims, the mindless violence in a certain group of, often young, people is a big problem. Reducing it to a gender thing is wrong and serves no-one.

I don't think it reduces it to a gender thing to bring this up in regards to street harassment, though. I remember talking to some women on reddit who admitted they felt less safe saying anything back to guys who harassed them after hearing about this case. I can't say that I blame them for that.
