I think your problem may be in the fact that both shows are epic trainwrecks at this point. Neither of them compares to Granada or the Soviet Holmes.

Re:AU adaptations, though, I've recently had a f!s conversation about this, and I think their appeal should mostly lie in how they echo and discuss the source material. They shouldn't and don't have to be "in-name-only". There are perfectly valid ways to make a modern AU without losing any connection it might've had to the original canon.
