I dunno, sheer inoffensiveness can be very refreshing when it comes to certain character types. I don't follow "Korra", but if Asami isn't a jealous bitch or a weepy damsel or any other extreme stereotype that tends to plague female characters, I can see why she'd be well-liked, just based on the absence of awful.

This isn't to say that female characters can't be more interesting or nuanced than just "not terrible", it's a very low rung to achieve, but when you eat shit for a long enough time, just plain old white bread can seem like a glorious feast.

I think her character type is interesting, and certainly not something that female characters as a lot. She's overcome her father's betrayal, managed to keep a large business afloat and is now an esteemed scientist in the city.

Problem is that she (and most other characters) just aren't explored in-depth in the show. There's a lot of potential to her, it's just not fully realized.

She's actually a businesswoman with very good self-defense skills who was suddenly thrust to the head of her father's business empire after he stabbed her in the back and revealed himself to be a lying biggoted asshole. Also, she likes driving race cars and has a huge house. She's obscenely rich but loses it all when she gets screwed over on a business deal (presumable she gets it back by kind of rebuilding most of a city after it got destroyed in an epic fight aftermath).

Also, she's probably the only person on the show who behaves well in their relationships right from the start (and is a grown up, emotionally). She's best friends with the other female lead and didn't let the fact that they dated the same guy (sometimes simultaneously) get between them.

She pretty much constantly gets shat on by the universe and gets screwed over by people pretending to help her. She has very little straight up character development which is a real shame. The fans really started from that "what a shame" sentiment and then, well, you always end up rooting for the underdog with the worst luck ever, no?

Finally, she's half of one of the most popular ships (femslash) which definitely helps with the popularity thing.

So she goes from "not developed enough, I really wanted to see more of her!" to crazy fans declaring her "perfect goddess of the show" which, you know, is ridiculous.

Damn this got long...

TL;DR she's really not a bad character but the fans tend to go way overboard with sanctifying her...

Lol I haven't really been watching the show, but she sounds like the kind of character female fans would go crazy over is she was a dude.

AYRT

As a female fan of the show, she and Korra definitely hit all the right spots for me. They're a femslash pairing that basically follows all the popular slash tropes that you generally see for male leads. It's pretty awesome.

ayrt

I definitely see the appeal of them. Yay for more femslash

lol All Asami's character was in season 1 was the jealous bitchy girlfriend, and was there to cause drama between Mako and Korra. In season two she was the weepy damsel who acted like a bitch to Mako, because OMG HOW DARE U NOT TELL ME U SINGLE! Then flops herself onto him. Oh, and the crying.

Now she's just there in the background.
